Research and Gap Analysis

GAPPS is leading an international team of core investigators to conduct a literature review and gap analysis on what we know and need to know about prematurity and stillbirth. Findings will be discussed at the May conference and a final report will be sent to key stakeholders in July 2009.

Our Research Framework

  • Discover the potential causes, magnitude, and opportunities to prevent premature births and stillbirths globally, through basic science and applied epidemiology.
  • Develop a comprehensive list of interventions to prevent premature births and stillbirths. Research will also address opportunities to care for and improve child health outcomes for those babies who survive premature birth and have increased risks for serious health problems
  • Deliver effective interventions to low-, middle- and high-income countries and settings. Delivery strategies will consider a packaging approach with other maternal, newborn and child health interventions. GAPPS will also identify ineffective interventions that should be discontinued.
  • Ethics and Social Justice considerations will be addressed in all areas, such as the significant health disparities within and between countries and the need to provide technologies and services to low-resource settings.
