Capitol Hill Briefing: Solutions for Reducing Preterm Births and Stillbirths Worldwide

Please join The Global Health Council and the Global Alliance to Prevent Prematurity and Stillbirth (GAPPS)

February 24 at 2:00PM
US Capitol Visitor Center Room SVC #209

Refreshments will be served.

Every year around the world, a staggering 13 million babies are preterm and another 3 million families suffer a stillbirth. Although the impact is most widely felt in low- and middle-income countries, rates of preterm births and stillbirths are on the rise everywhere, including in high-income countries. In the United State, for example, preterm birth is the 7th leading U.S. health care expenditure ($26B), yet perinatal health research ranks 63rd in NIH funding.

A new report, "Global Report on Preterm Birth and Stillbirth: The foundation for innovative solutions and improved outcomes," provides a comprehensive assessment of what is known, what needs to be known and what can be done to improve pregnancy outcomes. The report, led by GAPPS and funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Seattle Children's, was developed collaboratively by maternal, newborn and child health experts from around the globe.

Speakers will include:

  • Eve Lackritz, M.D., Acting Senior Advisor for Global Maternal Child Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
  • Goldy Mazia, M.D., M.P.H., PATH
  • Andrew Serazin, Program Officer, Global Health Program, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
  • Craig E. Rubens, M.D., PhD, Co-founder and Executive Director, Global Alliance to Prevent Prematurity and Stillbirth (GAPPS)
